The capital city of the British Virgin Islands is Road Town. Road Town is located on Tortola, which is the largest Island in the Virgin Islands. The town became the capital of the British Virgin Islands on August 1, 1834, because of its strategic position at the center of the southern coast of the island.
As per the 2016 census, the population of Road Town was 8,449. The metropolitan population of the capital is equal to the total urban population. The capital is the most populated town on the island, and is a major hub for jobs, particularly in the field of government.
The British Virgin Islands are a popular tourist destination, and the island of Tortola is particularly popular. The laid-back culture of the islands attract many, as do the pristine beaches and comfortable climate.
Road Town enjoys a unique tropical climate which is moderated by the trade winds. The temperatures on the Island vary throughout the year. The daily maximum temperature of the capital is around 32 degrees Celsius during the summer and 29 degrees Celsius during the winter. The lowest temperature in the capital during the summer is 24 degrees Celsius and 21 degrees Celsius in winter. The wettest months of the year are as from September to November while the driest months are February and March. Occasionally, hurricanes hit the island with hurricane season occuring between June and November.
