The capital city of Mozambique is Maputo. It is situated on the north of banks of Espírito Santo Estuary of Delagoa Bay. The city of Maputo was founded in 1782 and became the capital of Mozambique in 1887 under Portuguese rule. Maputo is the biggest city in the country. It is also known as the city of Acacias, referring to the Acacia trees prevalent in the country. The city has grown from a small trading center to a significant contributor to the economy of Mozambique. It has local industries like cement manufacturing, textile, shipbuilding and repair, and iron making among others.
The population of Maputo has grown significantly over the year. In 1980s the city had a population of 770,000 people and by 1997, it had 997,000 people. As of 2007, the city had a population of 1,766,184 residents living within the city while 1,766,823 residents lived in the greater metropolitan area. The city has a population density of 13,000 people per square mile. Many are attracted to the city because of the opportunities available.
The city of Maputo has a lot to offer to tourists. All the must-see sights are clustered together within the city. The north and south region of the city has beautiful and lovely beaches worth a visit. The train station, built in 1910, is a must-see. It features an elegant design. The next spot would be the Museum of the Revolution where all the history concerning Mozambique’s struggle for independence is displayed at the museum. For a drink, the famous Polana Hotel overlooking the bay is a lovely place to visit. The Tunduru Garden, which was known as the Vasco Da Gama Garden was established in 1880s by Thomas Honney, a British architect and has a Neo Manueline design style on its entrance. After the independence of the country the name of the garden was changed and a statue of first president was erected.
The capital of Maputo experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. The city receives 815 millimeters of rainfall annually. Rain starts from November to March while the heaviest precipitation is experienced in January with 120 millimeters. The hot season starts from December to March with February being the warmest month with an average temperature of 28 degree Celsius. The coldest month in the city is June with an average temperature of 19 degree Celsius. The best time to visit the city is from late April to October.
