The current capital of Montserrat is Brades, and it is known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean because of its Irish culture and lush rainforests. Brades became the de facto capital in 1998 after Plymouth, the former capital, faced destruction after the eruption of Soufriere Hills volcano in 1995. Although the step to make Brades capital was only temporary at the time, it has remained capital since then. However, the town of Little Bay is still under construction and is set to be the next capital of Montserrat after its completion. Brades is situated on the northwestern edge of Montserrat. It is positioned north of Bunkum Bay and St Peters Bay.

According to the estimates of 2017, the population of Montserrat is at 5,177 people. Out of these inhabitants, Brades is home to 1,000 people. It is, therefore, the largest city in Montserrat. The second largest city is St. Peters. The third largest city was Plymouth before the volcanic eruption occurred. The population growth rate in Brades is 0.52%.

Brades is home to a variety of attractions that make it popular among tourists. One of such attractions is Centre Hill. Most of the Island’s birds such as Bridled Quail-Dove, Montserrat Oriole, and the rare Forest Thrush make these tropical rainforests their home. A variety of reptiles and amphibians also inhabit the place. Of the nine nature trails in Montserrat, eight are found on Centre Hill and are popular among hikers. The second tourist attraction is Little Bay Beach. It is the most popular beach in Montserrat. Hilltop coffee house is not only popular for its coffee and pastry, but also serves as photos, videos, and art gallery all put together to tell different stories. Other tourist attractions in Brades include Montserrat National Trust’s botanical garden, Bat Cave, Montserrat Volcano Observatory, and Jack Boy Hill.

The climate experienced in Brades is tropical, and it is hot and humid all year round. There is a substantial amount of rainfall all through the year, including February which is the driest month. The moderately cold and dry period begins from January to April, and the hot, rainy season starts in June to November. Compared to other months, more rainfall is experienced in August and sometimes October. Although temperatures vary by around 3.2 degrees Celsius, the average temperature throughout the year is 26.2 degrees Celsius.
