Tokyo, formerly known as Edo, has been the defacto location of Japanese government since 1603 and was renamed Tokyo and given status as the capital city in 1868. Tokyo Metropolis, the official name of the area, was formed in 1943 with the merger of the City of Tokyo and the Tokyo Prefecture. Tokyo is located in the Kanto region of Japan on the southeastern part of Honshu Island. Tokyo also encompasses the Izu and Ogasawara Islands. Modern Tokyo remains the official home of the Emperor of Japan as well as the Japanese parliament.
As early as the late 19th century, Tokyo has been known for their large population. In 1889, the Japan Ministry of Home Affairs conducted a census that recorded 1,375,937 people in Tokyo City. The estimated current population of Tokyo city is 13.8 million people who make up 11 percent of the entire population of Japan. The whole Greater Tokyo Area has an estimated 38 million inhabitants at this point which makes it the world's most populous region.
Tokyo offers an abundance of unique attractions that will satisfy any traveller. From ancient temples to modern malls and theme parks, Tokyo is an attractive place to visit for many. Tokyo is well known for things like the cleanliness of streets, helpfulness of locals, transit, nightlife, and shopping. Tokyo has also hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics, 1979, 1986 and 1993 G-7 summits, and will also host the 2020 Summer Olympic Summer Paralympic Games.
The climate of Japan is classified as a humid subtropical climate, characterised by warm and humid summers as well as cool winters with sporadic cold weather. The warmest month in Japan is August which averages 26.4 degrees Celsius (79.5 Fahrenheit) and the coolest month in the country is January which averages 5.2 degrees Celsius (41.4 degrees Fahrenheit). Summer can be wet in Tokyo, and the city averages a yearly rainfall of 1,530 millimetres. Snowfall also occurs annually in Tokyo City. The Izu and Ogasawara Islands, also a part of Tokyo, experience tropical savanna climates.
