Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in South of Africa. The Zimbabwean government can be described as a presidential republic. The president is the leader of government and head of state as well. The government exercises executive powers while both parliament and the government exercise legislature.

The president and members of parliament are all elected. National elections are carried out every five years. The president is elected by a majority vote with a possibility of a second round if none of the candidates win in the first round. Parliament is made up of two houses, the Senate and the House of Assembly. The Senate consists of 80 members and the House of Assembly has 270 members. Single member voting regions elect 210 of the members. The remaining 60 seats are kept for women with every province having six seats. The Senate consists of 80 members with 60 elected members, six from each of the ten provinces. Two seats are given to each non-metropolitan district with the assembly of chiefs choosing the two members from their region. One male and one female seat for people with disabilities and the president and vice president of the National Council of chiefs each get one seat.

The house of parliament of Zimbabwe is located in Harare though there are plans to build a new one in Mount Hampden. The former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe lived in a private 25 bedroom presidential palace in the capital city, Harare. The property has two lakes and beautifully manicured lawns.

The dominant party in the country is the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF). Zimbabwe is mainly a one party state, but there are several opposition parties. Some of the opposition parties include the Movement for Democratic Change, Zimbabwe African National Union-Ndonga, National Alliance for Good Governance, Zimbabwe First Party, Zimbabwe Youth in Alliance, Liberal Democrats (Zimbabwe), and People’s Democratic Party-Zimbabwe.
