The flag of the Republic of Singapore is made up of 2 colors, a crescent, and five stars. The flag has two horizontal rectangular colors with red on top and white below. The crescent and the five stars form a circle on the top red section. The flag was adopted on December 3, 1959, but was made official after Singapore got independence in 1965. The white color on the flag represents virtue and purity. The red color symbolizes equality and universal brotherhood. The white five stars and the crescent stand for peace, equality, justice, democracy, and progress. The crescent of the flag also means Singapore’s young nation is rising. The two stripes on the flag are both equal. Singapore’s flag, unlike other flags, has a standard tone of the color red (Pantone 032). The shade is to be always used while designing the flag.

When Singapore gained independence and created their first head of state, they also got their first flag unveiled on the same day. Apart from the national flag the country even got its state crest and national anthem. The flag was created by several members of a committee among them deputy prime minister Dr. Toh Chin Chye who was the head.

Singapore was under British colonial rule until it achieved independence. The previous flags were all based on the design of the union jack. The flag used in the Straits Settlements comprised of the British ensign flag with three golden crowns representing each settlement. A red inverted pall separated the crowns. The flag was used until 1942. The second flag was used during the Crown Colony of Singapore. The flag had the British ensign with a white ball.
