In 1565, The Philippines were colonized by the Spanish Empire. During the first six years as the Spanish East Indies, Cebu served as the capital. Under conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, Tondo and Manila were captured. In 1571, Manila was established as the capital of the Spanish East Indies. It would remain the capital of the Spanish East Indies until 1898. Spanish forces were defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War. The capital was moved to Iloilo. Iloilo was the last capital of the Spanish East Indies before being turned over to the United States Of America.

Manila is home to around 12.8 million people in its metro area. However, when the city's urban area is taken into consideration, the population doubles. Manila is one of the world's most densely populated inner cities.

Manila is a major tourist attraction for domestic and international travelers alike, and acts as a gateway to the Philippines. Day trips from the city are available to areas with beautiful beaches and natural scenery.

Manila has a tropical savanna climate. The rainiest months are June, July, August, September and October. In the months of February, March, and April, almost no rainfall is experienced.
