The capital city of Mayotte is Mamoudzou. The city of Mamoudzou lies on the central eastern side of Grand-Terre Island. Mamoudzou became the capital in 1977 after it was moved from Petite-Terre Island. The initial capital was Dzaoudzi, which was also the capital of all the colonial Comoros. Mamoudzou is the biggest and most populous in Mayotte. Although Mamoudzou is the capital city, it does not have an airport. Mayotte's international airport is on Petite-Terre Island.
The city of Mamoudzou is made up of several villages and has a population of 57,281 residents. The most populous of the six villages is Kaweni with a population of 13,276 people. The population figure represents the number of residents living in the city and metropolitan areas. Mamoudzou city is the most populated on Mayotte Island.
The beaches within the city provide the best water activities for tourists. Some of the water activities are angling, scuba diving, snorkeling, spearfishing, sailing, and diving. Tourists can also explore the beautiful lagoons by taking a canoe or boat. Other interesting places to visit include the Ngoudja, Moya, and Salou beaches. The different people and their influence on the city have brought in different dishes and culinary to try out. They range from African, French, Indian, and Arabic dishes. The city experiences a tropical type of climate. Temperatures throughout the year are at an average of 71 degrees Fahrenheit to 87 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainfall starts from October to May with January, receiving a significant amount of rain. The hot season starts from November to March. The city also experiences winds from May to August with an average speed of 8.6 miles per hour. The best time to visit the city is from mid-June to late September. The weather is favorable for outdoor activities. Apart from the months from mid-May to late October the weather is hot and favorable for water activities.
