Beijing is located on the northern side of China. As Macao is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, its capital city is technically the same as China's.
Beijing is the most populous city in China with a population of approximately 21 million people. Out of this population, a greater percentage live in the city than in the surrounding areas: a factor which has contributed to the rapid growth of Beijing’s population.
The Great Wall of China is perhaps the most famous tourist attraction site in the city of Beijing. This site is over 1,000 years and is a magnate for international tourists, with millions of tourists paying a visit every year. Other major sites in Beijing include the Forbidden City, Hutong courtyards, and the 798 Art Zone exhibition center.
Beijing’s climate consists of hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Summer takes place from June to August and winter lasts from December to February. The coldest month is January while July is the hottest month. The city receives approximately 577mm of rainfall in a year with the wettest month being August with 182mm of rainfall. In recent years, China has experienced flooding in urban cities due to loss of natural water bodies and land. In 2012, Beijing was hit by a catastrophic flood that occasioned destruction of property worth USD 1.6 million.
