Luxembourg Flag

The flag of Luxembourg is made up of of three colors which are aligned horizontally. The red color is on top with the white in the middle and blue at the bottom. The flag can be in the proportion of 1:2 or 3:5 when in the landscape orientation. The tricolor flag almost resembles the flag of Netherlands. The blue shade of the Luxembourg flag is lighter than that of the Netherlands. The inspiration of choice of color is obtained from the coat of arms of House of Luxembourg. The tricolor flag of Luxembourg was officially adopted on June 23, 1972.

Luxembourg’s flag color scheme originated from the court of arms of the Grand Duke, circa the 13^th century. The red color at the top of the flag signifies the power, revolution, and vibrancy of the people of Luxembourg. It also symbolizes the courage and domination of the Luxembourgian. The white color in the middle signifies the peace, harmony, and innocence of the people. The people of Luxembourg envision a country where people will live in harmony and strive for peace at all time. The blue color at the bottom signifies determination and perseverance of the people.

The Grand Dukes Court of Arms played a hand in the design of the Luxembourgish flag. The court of arms dates back to medieval times. The court of arms has a red lion and blue and red stripes in the background. The colors of the flag were branded in 1830 during the time of the Belgian Revolution and officially designed in 1845. The flag also obtains its inspiration from the flag of France. Its resemblance to the flag of Netherlands is considered to be purely coincidental.

Luxembourg did not have any flag until the year 1830. As Luxembourg is a landlocked country, The Grand Duchy did not see a need for a flag at one time. However, during the Belgian Revolution in the 1930s, a tricolor banner was developed consisting of red, white, and blue colors. The current Luxembourg flag was first used in 1845 and 1848. It was officially recognized as the national flag of Luxembourg on June 12, 1972. Since then, the flag has been used as a symbol of national unity and patriotism. The flag is used in the military, in government offices, in sporting activities and in recognition of Luxembourgish Ship at sea.
