The capital city of Honduras is Tegucigalpa, which was formally known as Tegucigalpa Municipality of the Central District. The city is often referred to as Teguz, and it is the seat of the Republic’s government together with Comayaguela, its twin sister. Under the leadership of President Marco Aurelio Soto, Tegucigalpa became the capital city of Honduras on October 30, 1880. According to the country’s current constitution, both Comayaguela and Tegucigalpa serve as the permanent capital of the country, acting as a Central District. The capital city of Honduras is found in the southern-central region of the country which is called the department of Francisco Morazan, and the region also happens to be the departmental capital. Tegucigalpa is situated in a valley encompassed by mountains. Being sister cities, Comayagüela and Teguz are physically divided by the Choluteca River.

Tegucigalpa is not only the largest city in Honduras, but is also the most populous as well as the country’s administrative and political center. The city hosts 16 consulates and 25 embassies. According to a census of 2013, the city of Tegucigalpa had a population of 1,157,509 while the urban population accounted for 1,055,729. The infrastructure of Tegucigalpa has been unable to keep up with the growth of its population. Poverty, deficient urban planning, and densely condensed urbanization are all problems facing the city.

The colonial city of Tegucigalpa has a history which spans over 400 years. The National Chamber of Tourism of Honduras estimates that around 250,000 tourists visit the capital city during summer. In Easter of 2011, at least 300,000 tourists visited Tegucigalpa. Some of the city’s parks include Parque Juan A. Lainez, Central Park, Parque Del Soldado, Plaza del Libertador, Parque Herrera, and Parque Espana. North of the city lies La Tigra National Park while the United Nations National Park which is home to the Picacho Metropolitan Zoo is located north of the city on El Picacho Hill offering a great view of Tegucigalpa.

The city experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. Compared to the big cities found in Central America, the climate of Tegucigalpa is among the most pleasant because of the city’s high altitude. January and December are the coolest months in Tegucigalpa with an average temperature of 57°F whereas April and March are the hottest with temperatures reaching up to 104 °F.
