Falkland Islands Languages

English is the official language spoken in the Falklands. English is used in day to day life, in both casual and official contexts in the country. There are no variations in English spoken in the regions of Falkland Islands. English is spoken all over the territory. English is an Indo-European language that falls under the West Germanic family of languages. English has 26 letters in its alphabet, 21 consonants and 5 vowels. The language uses Latin script in writing.

English is spoken by almost everybody who is native to Falkland Island. This is approximately 91% of the total population of the country.

The English language spoken in Falkland is predominantly British in nature. However, due to the country’s isolation, the English has evolved and developed a unique dialect and accent that differs from the British English. The accent tends to be stronger among the rural dwellers of Falkland. Falkland Island English has largely borrowed from the Spanish language. The loanwords are however modified or corrupted so that they can comfortably fit into the Falkland English pronunciation and spelling rules.

Other than the official English language, there are a number of other languages spoken by the significant minority in Falkland Island. The most spoken minority language in the country is Spanish. Approximately 10% of the total population of Falkland Island is conversant with Spanish.
