Cameroon Capitals

The capital city of Cameroon is Yaoundé, which is located in the south central region of the country. This location is characterized by its lush forests, which grow over the entire plateau region. Yaoundé sits at 2,382 feet above sea level and has two rivers that run on either side, the Sanaga and the Nyong. This city was first established in 1888, when the area was occupied by German colonizers. At the beginning of the 20th century, Belgian forces took control of the area and made Yaoundé the capital in 1922. It has remained the center of political administration since then, with the exception of a brief period between 1940 and 1946.

The population of Yaoundé is just over 2.44 million, making this the second most populated city in the country. Many of these individuals practice urban agriculture, which means they raise livestock or grow produce within city limits. This practice is partially influenced by the agricultural importance of this region. In fact, many residents of Yaoundé are employed by the one of the following industries: coffee, dairy, lumber, tobacco, and sugarcane.

Yaoundé does not receive many tourists as this city serves primarily as a public administration and diplomatic hub. Because it is not considered popular with tourists, the local government has done little to improve, or even establish, tourism infrastructure. Despite this, Yaoundé does have several interesting attractions, including: the presidential palace, the Blackitude Museum, the Cathédrale Notre Dame des Victoires, the Afhemi Museum, and the Mvog Betsi zoo.

Yaoundé is situated within a tropical wet and dry climate zone. Despite being located in a tropical region, the altitude of this city prevents it from reaching extremely high temperatures. The wet climate here extends beyond the typical average as this city experiences around 10 months of rainy season every year from February to November, with the wettest month being October. In fact, Yaoundé receives nearly 61 inches of precipitation annually. Its average daily temperature is anywhere from 73° to 78° fahrenheit.
