Bermuda Capitals

Bermuda is a British overseas territory and its capital city is Hamilton, a port city located on the Southern side of Pembroke Parish. The area was acquired in 1790 and later designated as a city. It was incorporated three years later with the motto "Hamilton Sparsa Collegit" meaning "Hamilton has brought together the scattered." It was named after the Governor Henry Hamilton. It has been the capital since 1815 replacing the historic town of St. George as the capital. It is the center of commercial and administrative activities in Bermuda.

As of 2010, Hamilton had a small population of 5,862 with a population density of 2,860 per square mile. About 54% of the population were black, 31% were white, 8% were mixed race, and Asians made up 4% of the population. The small number of inhabitants in the city is because of the people working in the capital are from other parishes and commute either by driving, taking the bus, or by taking the ferry to the city as it has over 90% of the islands’ employers. A significant proportion of the islands working population work in Hamilton.

Tourists visiting Hamilton can go snorkeling to see the local marine life or the various shipwrecks in the waters. Additionally, they can go scuba diving, kayaking, and canoeing and can visit various landmarks like the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, visit museums like the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute which showcases the diverse marine life as well as the historic shipwrecks of Bermuda.

Hamilton’s weather is classified as a Humid Subtropical Climate. This means that it gets relatively high temperatures with precipitation being evenly distributed throughout the year. With average temperatures of 82.0°F, August is the warmest month while the month of February is the coolest with average temperatures hovering around 64.0°F. Summers receive relatively higher rainfall than the winters with much of the rainfall caused by convectional thunderstorm activity and tropical cyclones. Rainfall in the relatively mild winters is caused by westerly moving extratropical cyclone fronts. Although the Atlantic Ocean moderates temperatures, the high temperatures can sometimes lead to unbearably warm nights. The average amount of precipitation for the year in Hamilton is 55.4 inches
