Azerbaijan Capital

Baku or Baki is the capital of Azerbaijan. Not only is it the most populous city in the country, it is also the most populated settlement on the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus region. Nicknamed “The City of Winds,” Baku is a unique place. It lies 92 feet below sea level and is thus the most populated city to be situated below sea level.

2012 estimates indicate that the population of this cosmopolitan city is 3,202,300 people. As of 2009 official census, Baku had slightly over 2 million people and approximately 25% of the entire Azerbaijan lived in the metropolitan area of Baku. Currently, the entire city is 110 square miles and has a population density of 2,580.6 per square mile.

Baku is an important tourist destination, especially in the Caucasus and it continues to develop supportive infrastructure like hotels to boost the sector. There are many attractions like Fountains Square which has several historical and modern attractions, Shikhov Beach, Oil Rocks, One and Thousand Nights Beach, and the Yanar Dag. In addition to these, there are facilities like Baku Museum of Modern Art and Azerbaijan State Museum of History. The city also hosts a variety of entertainment spots, parks, and gardens among other amenities. In the surrounding area of the city, there are a number of mud volcanoes, salt lakes, and the Baku Archipelago. These facilities are very popular with foreign visitors.

The climate of Baku is a temperate semi-arid climate that experiences cool and wet winters, warm and dry summers, and wind throughout the year reaching 89 miles an hour hence the name, “the City of Winds.” These winds occasionally damage roofs, trees, and crops. With a precipitation of less than eight inches annually, Baku and its environs are the driest parts of Azerbaijan.
